Scope of activities

HELLENIC SUGAR INDUSTRY SA is the sole sugar producer in Greece and the most significant agricultural industry of the country, since more than 7.000 beet-growers depend their income upon its operation.

The main activity of the company is the production and trade of sugar, as well as the trade of its by-products. The company produces white crystal sugar whereas in the course of production a set of by-products is also being produced which following a proper processing are made available in the market. In concrete terms, the products produced and traded by the company are as follows:

The white crystal sugar is the staple of the company, and in case of additional demand sugar importations are carried out from the E.U. countries. Also the company imports and trades sugar for energetic-perfection, which is used by canneries. The sugar product produced by the company is in quality terms, one of the best in the European Union.

Molasses is a sugar by-product and is used as a raw material to produce alcohol, yeasts and cattle feed. Sugar beet pulp pellets is cattle feed and is prepared by dry pulp (by-product of sugar) with the addition of molasses. Nutrica 135 is a sort of cattle feed which is used for fattening the calfs and is prepared by dry pulp and molasses, with an addition of trace elements and vitamins. The fresh pulp is cattle feed with a bigger content in water than the sugar beet pulp pellets .

The company is also engaged in producing beetseed out of sugarbeets which, after a proper processing, is being sold to the beet-growers while some quantity is being exported to seedproducing companies abroad. For this purpose the company keeps at Plati a modernized unit of processing and pelletizing the seed. Also at the company's premises at Sindos, Thessaloniki, there is a Research center of Genetics and varieties diversification, whereat are developed seed varieties suitable for the conditions prevalent in the Greek beet cultivation.

With a view to checking completely the quality of the beets that the company gets supplied with, besides the seeds made available to the producers, the company undertakes the necessary sprayings for the plant protection as well as every other service in order to serve the quality of the raw material produced. Also the very well organized and fully trained network of agriculturists and technicians is always close to the beet-growers and advises them properly in order to achieve a productive and qualitative crop. In this way the company controls the beet-growing process in all stages (sow-plant-protection-harvest), safeguarding in this way a better quality for the sugar beets.

During the last three years the single part of the working cycle and, namely, 89,77% came from selling products of own production, whereas only 10,23% came from trading goods. The total sales of sugar which is the staple of the company, came in the same period to 88,19% of the total sales, while in none of the surveyed usages the sales of sugar fell below 86% of the total circle of works.

The operation is regarded as fully verticalized since apart from the production units the company keeps package-rooms as well as the necessary vehicles demanded for delivery of bulk sugar and of the remaining products.

The sugar price in the European Union (EU) is shaped upon basis price, which is fixed once a year, whereas the end user's prices fluctuate at the boundaries of the basis price. The E.U has imposed special duties on the sugar imported from countries outside E.U. so that it can protect the European industry from cheaper sugar imports. In Greece sugar is sold at a single price throughout the country. Below are shown the most significant raw materials and their quantities which are necessary to produce 158.700 tons of sugar.

Alteration in the prices of the supplementary materials used by th company such as, coke and lime-stone, slightly affects the cost of the produced goods, whereas a significant impact on industrial cost may be caused by any price fluctuations in the beets, nazout, and the cost of work. The cost of beets stands for the 50-60% of the cost of sugar production.
