General data of the Branch

THE HELLENIC SUGAR INDUSTY S.A. based upon the statistical classification of the economic activity Branches (STAK0D) of E.S.Y.E belongs to the Branch of Foodstuffs and Beverages production (STAKOD: 15) and especially to the sub-branch of sugar production (STAKOD: 158.3).

The company's main focus is in production and trade of the white crystal sugar and its by-products. It is the sole sugar producer in Greece and is functioning in the framework of the common agricultural policy of the European Union (E.U) and more specifically according to the Council Regulation 1234/2007 which establishes the Single CMO Regulation for certain agricultural products like sugar.

In February 2006, EU agriculture ministers formally adopted a radical reform of the EU sugar sector. The key to the reform was a 36% cut in the guaranteed minimum sugar price (from 631.9 €/tonne in 2006/2007 to 404.4 €/tonne from 2009/2010), compensation for farmers and a Restructuring Fund financed by sugar producers to encourage uncompetitive sugar producers to leave the industry.

The 2006-2009 scheme for the restructuring of the European sugar industry resulted in the renunciation of 5.8 million tonnes of quota. At the end of this 3-year process, EU quota for sugar and isoglucose has been lowered to 14 million tonnes (of which 13.3 million tonnes for sugar).

In 2007/2008, during the restructuring program, Greece renounced half of its initial national quota resulting to 158.702 tonnes from 317.502.

In the following table is shown the sugar production in the E.U. countries throughout the period 2006/2007 – 2008/2009.
